An electric fence that alarms constantly doesn't just get annoying - it trains everyone in the household to start ignoring it, which defeats the point of having it in the first place. The good news is that most false alarms trace back to a small number of fixable causes.
This is by far the most common cause. Branches, creepers or long grass touching the fence line create an intermittent earth fault that trips the system, often only when the wind blows or after rain when foliage is heavier with moisture. Regularly trimming back anything within reach of the fence line solves this in most cases.
Wiring joints that aren't properly sealed allow moisture to creep in over time, especially after heavy rain. This often shows up as a fence that behaves normally in dry weather but starts tripping during or after rain - a strong clue that a joint needs attention rather than the energizer itself.
Energizers lose output over time, and one that's undersized for the length of fence it's protecting will struggle in marginal conditions - exactly when a slightly damp connection or a bit of vegetation contact would otherwise be a non-issue. If your fence has grown longer than when the energizer was first installed, this is worth checking.
Every connection point on an electric fence is a potential weak spot. Over years of sun, rain and temperature swings, these connections can corrode or work themselves loose, creating resistance that the system interprets as a fault.
It's easy to overlook, but rodents chewing through insulation, or small animals repeatedly brushing against a low wire, can cause intermittent faults that are tricky to pin down without walking the fence line systematically.
Start with the simplest, most likely cause: walk the fence line and clear any vegetation within reach of the wires. If alarms continue, particularly after rain, the next step is checking joints and connectors for moisture ingress. If the pattern doesn't match either of these, it's worth having the system tested properly - voltage readings at different points along the fence quickly reveal where the fault actually is, rather than continuing to guess.
